According to learning experiences, few children are capable of reading and comprehending the intent of a question, which is critical for understanding the core skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

As a result, students should be introduced to critical verbs, or signal words, that arise frequently in mathematics problems and given practice solving problems that contain these phrases.

Addition

The following terms indicate that addition should be utilized in a math problem: increase, and, plus, sum, more than, add, combine, total. The following are some instances of how these terminologies are used:

Calculate the product of three and six. What is the sum of three and six? What is the sum of the numbers three and six? Three and six are combined. How much more than six is three? Increase three by six.

Subtraction

Less, less than, take away, spent, left, how much less, difference, compare, and fewer all imply that subtraction should be used to solve things.

The mathematical problem is the same and can be phrased as follows:

What is the distinction between the numbers three and six? Subtract three from the total of six. What is the difference between six and three digits? Three is how many less than six? Subtract three from six. Subtract three from the total of six. After spending three of his six dollars, how much money does he have remaining? How much is a three-dollar item less expensive than a six-dollar item? How many oranges do I have remaining if you have six?

Multiplication

Students should look for the following signal words to determine whether or not to apply multiplication to solve a problem:

Product, times, tripled, doubled, each, of and per.

Consider the following:

What is the distinction between the numbers 3 and 6? What are 3 times 6? What is the product of 3 and 6? What are 3 times 6? How much is 3 of 6? Each of the three compact discs is $6. What is the overall cost? You’re interested in ordering six shirts. Three bucks for each shirt. How much would the shirts cost in total?

Division

The terms partition, split, share, quotient, divide, distribute, and halve all imply that the problem must be partitioned.

Numerous problems exist, including the following:

18 should be divided into three equal parts. You have fifteen oranges that you desire to distribute evenly among yourself and two friends. How many oranges will be distributed to each individual? What is the difference between 18 and 3? What is half of eighteen dollars? Three out of eighteen is what percentage?
